Synopsis: STORM is dying. An unknown form of radiation poisoning from the OKLAHOMA INCIDENT has turned her cells into ticking time bombs. As her final hours count down, will she find a cure for her illness at NIGHT NURSE’s new super-hero hospital, or will it require enchantments from DOCTOR VOODOO to save her life?
The Story
Having suffered severe radiation poisoning in the previous issue, Storm continues rescuing people despite being on borrowed time. With only hours left to live, she seeks help at Night Nurse’s new superhero hospital. However, upon arrival, Storm encounters prejudice from the attending doctor. Years earlier, when she led the X-Men, the team had been unable to assist him during a time of need, and the doctor still harbors resentment. Adding to the tension, the X-Men never contributed to the hospital, leading the doctor to initially refuse her treatment. Desperate, Storm offers him an old family heirloom of significant value. Reluctantly, the doctor agrees to help and refers her to Doctor Voodoo, as only magic can save her life.
The Artwork
Lucas Werneck delivers fantastic art in this issue. I especially loved the opening panels, where Storm heroically rescues a ship under attack by pirates. The panels leading up to Doctor Voodoo’s introduction were also a standout, building anticipation beautifully.
Overall
A solid second issue that builds on the foundation laid in issue one. I really enjoyed the moment where our hero is asked to leave the ship she just rescued because the captain fears her illness might trigger her powers, potentially causing an explosion with the flammable cargo on board. Another highlight was the scene where Storm is initially denied treatment and has to negotiate to get the help she desperately needs.
Overall, this was a strong issue that sets up plenty to look forward to in issue three when it hits stores next month.
