MACE

Synopsis: INTRODUCING THE SHROUD! Just as MACE and smuggler AZITA CRUUZ arrive at her freighter, they’re beset by MURO, DIYA and the leader of their cult, THE SHROUD. The Shroud is something that Mace Windu was never trained for and isn’t prepared for – and might push a JEDI KNIGHT to his breaking point!

The Story

As they prepare to leave so that Mace can return to the Jedi Order with a new fuel source Mace and Azita Cruuz come face to face with The Shroud’s leader. Mace and the leader fight a duel where it soon becomes apparent that the Shroud leader has received Jedi training. Soon he taunts Windu with his knowledge of the force claiming that there is no light or dark side. There is only power.

The Artwork

Georges Jeanty pulls off some fantastic artwork on this book. The duel between Windu and the Shroud leader is brilliantly drawn. Jeanty brings a brilliant intensity to the characters’ facial expressions while they due. I particularly enjoyed the panels where we see Mace and his adversary playing a dangerous game of hide and seek. Our hero hides for a short time to recuperate and prepare for a second round of combat. The sequence where Azita tries to shoot the shroud leader is also well-drawn and compliments the dialogue in that moment.

Overall

Marc Bernardin concludes this story in style. The action throughout is visceral and we have an interesting new villain in the form of the Shroud Leader who could be brought back to taunt the Jedi Order in future stories. I’ve really enjoyed the relationship that has formed between smuggler Azita Cruzz and Windu throughout all issues of the book. So hopefully we will see that picked up on in future adventures set in the Clone Wars era.
