Synopsis: “CHEWBACCA BEHIND BARS!” Chewie is held captive on the prison planet of Gulhadar! And you’ll never believe who his cellmate is. None other than Maz Kanata! And whatever happened to the Millennium Falcon?
The Story
Picking up from where the last issue left off. Han has been critically wounded and left for dead. While Chewbacca has found himself imprisoned on Gulhadar and is getting aggressively involved in some recreational activities. However, it seems that he is not alone in his hard time as Maz Kanata has also run into some legal troubles. The story picks up with Chewie in the middle of a fight with one of the inmates and Maz Kanata is giving plenty of encouragement. However, it looks pretty bad for Chewie as his opponent has him by the throat. But the tide soon changes thanks to some help from Thaedra who seems to have a broad skill set when it comes to criminal activities. However lucky for Chewie. She has an escape plan, but there is a catch.
Elsewhere, Han’s father and his crew of misfits work to get the Falcon out of an imperial impound as they work to retrieve the Urn. Meanwhile, Han runs into some extraordinary luck.
Artwork
David Messina gets quite a lot of action to draw in this issue as we see Han’s father’s crew work toward liberating the Falcon from the Imperial impound. I really enjoyed the panels where we seen the Stormtroopers and their superior officers looking around the Falcon for all of the little hideaways. This grouping of panels makes the reveal of what they missed all the more fun.
The action that takes place on the Prison Planet with Chewbacca is a bit more visceral. I really liked how Thaedra gets introduced to the story and how she sort of helps chewie out. I also enjoyed seeing Maz Kanata egging Chewie on.
Overall
This was a great issue, which allowed for the introduction of quite a few characters from elsewhere in the Star Wars universe. I really enjoyed how Tonga was used. But the introduction of Maz Kanata is probably the one that your more mainstream fans will latch onto.
Also, good to see that Han survived his ordeal. Interesting choice to give him a beard and moustache.
