Synopsis: This month in Year Five. A pandemic raging across Alpha Centauri. A powerful enemy aboard the Enterprise. With death lurking around every corner, the crew will face down one of their greatest challenges yet in the shocking conclusion to this episode from Eisner-winning writer Jim McCann.
The Story
Picking the story up from last month. We have discovered that it was Isis. Gary 7’s changeling partner released the virus on Alpha Centauri. So, while Chekov and Sulu try to capture Isis. Kirk works with Dr. McCoy to try and find a cure for the virus. And their friendship comes under a little friction as McCoy races against the clock to figure out a cure. Meanwhile, Spock leads a landing party to find ground zero of the outbreak.
The Artwork
The art duties in ‘Star Trek: Year Five’ have been undertaken by Angel Hernandez who pulls a fair few tricks out of his hat on this issue. I particularly enjoyed the series of panels in which Sulu and Chekov were struggling to capture and contain Isis who was using her shapeshifting abilities to great effect. There is one panel towards the end of the fight in which we see Isis’s more human form transforming out of the Tholian form that she’d been using to take out a majority of Chekov’s security detail.
Hernandez also does a brilliant job of capturing the drama of McCoy’s efforts to find a cure for the virus. Especially when it came to the facial expressions of McCoy and Kirk as they argued about the procedures in use.
Overall
Writer Jim McCann does a nice job of drawing his story to a satisfying conclusion. But we are still left wondering what happened to Isis and what Gary 7’s next move will be. Especially given that his orders are to take out Kirk and the Enterprise crew.
