Synopsis: Let the race begin! After entering a crime lord’s starship competition to save an innocent pilot, the U.S.S. Enterprise jets through a gauntlet of dangerous environments in the unexplored Scorpius sector. But cosmic storms and sentient ship-eating asteroids aren’t the only obstacles the crew will have to survive…
Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves smack bang in the middle of the Scorpius Run, which is a race through a relatively unexplored and dangerous part of space. Further adding to their troubles is the fact that the crime lord Zephyx has taken The Enterprises First Officer and Science Officer and placed them on rival ships and substituted the Enterprise crew members with Aliens from other ships. However, Pike sees this as a potential advantage and asks his chief Engineer to make use of their new alien crew members. But when one of their rivals puts out a distress call. Pike and his crew find out just how far Zephyx is prepared to go when it comes to changing the rules of the race.
Angel Hernandez continues to do some fantastic work on this book and gets to illustrate some interesting concepts. One of which is an alien species that appears to look like rocks, but is attracted to dilithium and literally chomp into the hulls of Starships that are fueled by dilithium. Seeing a rock creature with teeth makes for an interesting visual. We also get a great visual of one of the ships exploding. So this book has plenty of great things to look at.
This second issue of The Scorpius Run does a pretty good job of moving the story forward. I liked the little insight that we got into how the other alien crews function and how we get shown that through Una and Spock’s eyes. I also loved how well Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrott have written for Lt. Erica Ortegas, who is a character that I feel has been underwritten for on the TV series.
