Resurgence

Synopsis: This month in Star Trek: Resurgence. After discovering the Talarians are being commanded by no stranger to Federation archives, Captain Solano and First Officer Sutherland board the suspicious Talarian vessel. But just as hope is within sight, talks of peace are derailed by an aggressive visitor and a shocking revelation.

The Story

Picking up from where the last issue left off. Captain Solano and Sutherland have gone into Talarian space in order to find and rescue Dr. Leah Brahms. As they arrive at the border they find themselves being greeted by Captain Jono. The only human Captain within the Talarian fleet. Having been caught red-handed. Solano reverts to taking a diplomatic approach and takes Jono up on his invitation to board the station and learn about what the Talarians are doing. But when Solano and Sutherland beam over. Jono claims to have no knowledge of Leah Brahms and her experimental warp technology. However, before they have a chance to test Jono’s lie. A superior officer from the Talarian Fleet comes in and had both Solano and Sutherland detained. Added to this. He also orders open hostility toward Solano’s ship.

The Artwork

Josh Hood continues to do a great job with the artwork. I particularly enjoyed the sequence of panels in which we see members of Solano’s crew execute a rescue of their Captain and First officer as well as Leah Brahms. I also enjoyed the brief throwback to TNG at the start of the book where we see Brahms broach the subject of her warp theory with famed Federation Engineer Geordie La Forge. This ties the world of Resurgence to the present day in Star Trek and its also a pretty cool tip of the hat to perhaps the Best Star Trek series we have ever seen other than the classic series.

Charlie Kirchoff’s colorwork continues to elevate the art and take it where no art has gone before. I really loved the detail of the radiation damage to half of Jono’s superior officers’ face. Added to that the action beats of the rescue mission felt very much like a Star Trek episode in regards to the combination of great linework and solid colors.

Overall

Writers Daniel Martin and Andrew Grant continue to impress with their knowledge of Star Trek as they incorporate it into this prequel story to the forthcoming game. Using and expanding on the Talarians is a masterstroke given that they were one of the most interesting races that we got to see throughout the lifespan of TNG. I also love that they have brought Jono back and I’m wondering if he will continue to tow the Talarian line or will he cave and join the Federation.

Overall. This is a comic that older Star Trek fans that remember the golden age of TNG and DS9 will appreciate.
