In Review: Star Trek: Prelude to Day of Blood

The Story

When Captain Meyerson and his Klingon friend Valker pay a visit to the Klingon Homeworld. They wind up watching a rousing speech about the Red Path in which the story of Kahless gets retold. By the end of the speech, all hell breaks loose and The Captain, who was raised to hate Klingons by his father finds himself in the middle of the outbreak of a civil war. Just before he is able to beam back to his ship. His Klingon friend Valker reveals himself to be Alexander the son of legendary Starfleet Officer Worf. The first Klingon to serve in Starfleet.

The Artwork

Mike Feehan and  Chris Fenoglio do a great job of capturing the mood with their art. The panels that take place on The Klingon Homeworld put me in mind of various scenes in movies and TV Mini-series that have seen over the years of political rallies in which the crowd is riled up to support their cause. The art team does a great job of capturing the micro-expressions on the various Klingon faces in the crowd as a fuse is gradually lit by the Klingon orator. The panel where Alexander reveals himself to Captain Meyerson is brilliantly done and sets things up beautifully for the final few pages.

Overall

This prelude does a wonderful job of adding more layers to a story arc that was started a few months back in the regular ongoing Star Trek comics series. I look forward to reading the first official issue next week to see how it will cross over with the new Defiant book as well as the other Star Trek comic titles that I buy.
