Synopsis: It’s do-or-die for Picard and cadets in the finale of Picard’s Academy! Romulans storm the ship while Starfleet remains out of reach and potentially unaware of the threat headed their way, but the cadets have finally come to an agreement, electing Jean-Luc to the captain’s chair. They’re finally willing to follow Picard’s lead, and Picard is finally willing to acknowledge their feedback—now acting as a proper crew. But is it too late? Will Picard fail his crewmates once again and, worse yet, see the start of an interstellar war? So much for graduating early!
The Story
Having finally figured out a way to work together and formulate a plan in the last issue. Picard and his crew set their plan to save the Earth into motion, but pretty soon it all comes crashing down as they learn that it was all a clever simulation. Suddenly finding themselves back at the Academy. Picard and the cadets learn that they failed the exam, but it soon becomes apparent that the test was far from a waste of time. Every single one of them grew from the experience. Including a certain Doq who happens to be an omnipotent being who is undercover.
The Artwork
Overall
Sam Maggs finishes her Picard story with a bit of flair and makes clever use of Boothby to help wrap things up. Throughout this story, we have seen a very different Jean Luc Picard from the one that we know and love. It’s been quite a character journey as the young Picard we see initially isn’t, particularly the most likable of people. But by the close of this story we get to the Picard that Admiral Hanson describes in The Best of Both Worlds.
