Defiant

Synopsis: This month in Star Trek: Defiant. Disavowed from Starfleet despite their heroic actions, Worf and his crew set out in their new roles as bounty hunters on their first mission since the bloody battle against the tyrant Kahless. Their first target: an individualized ex-member of the Borg Collective known as Hugh.

The Story

Having been disavowed from Starfleet in the last issue. Worf and his ragtag crew get to work on their first mission. The capture and apprehension of the Borg known as Hugh. However, given that the Defiant requires at least a crew of 20 people. Worf’s crew of five is spread thin and fatigue might start to be a factor. Added to this. Worf is feeling at sea and without a strong sense of purpose given that he is no longer Starfleet. He needs a compass to help guide his actions and hold him to account.

In terms of their mission. It isn’t long before Worf and his crew encounter Hugh. But it is Huge that has the advantage during this encounter.

The Artwork

Mike Feehan and  Marissa Louise continue to do some solid work with the artwork. I loved the work they do for the nomad probe, which is something that I haven’t really seen since the Original Series episode ‘The Changeling’. We get a really nice series of panels in which we see this new Nomad probe penetrate a Borg Scout ship and help Hugh in his mission to free individuals from the Borg collective. I also loved the micro-expressions on the borg’s face as it gets released from the collective.

Overall

This new story arc from Christopher Cantwell is off to a fairly strong start. I’m loving the respectful relationship that has been developing between Worf and Mr. Spock and I am also loving the occasional references that Spock makes to his time serving with Captain Kirk and how that is being used only when the situation warrents it.

Overall. I’m continuing to enjoy this book about some of Star Trek’s most complex characters.
