Synopsis: Part two of “Lore War.” On one side of the war, Worf, Shaxs, Alexander, and others who once valued honor above all have now been designed by the malevolent android Lore to uphold his dictatorial rule; on the other side, a rebel Maquis fleet, Kahless II, Beverly, Sisko, and all those who know the truth behind their current reality endeavor to tear it down with what little resources they have. But not everything is as hopeless as it seems: There are allies hidden in the unlikeliest of places and assets—like the famous U.S.S. Phoenix—that escape even the all-seeing positronic eye of Lore.

The Story

Picking up from the events of Lore War: Part One, Sisko and Kahless II set a daring plan into motion: steal the Phoenix warp ship from a 2070s Earth shipyard. Unexpectedly, they gain an extra passenger—Doctor Beverly Crusher—who’s growing concerned that Sisko might be experiencing a psychotic break. However, it doesn’t take long for Sisko and Kahless to convince her otherwise, especially after they cleverly launch the Phoenix by distracting Data with a looped feed of Spot as a kitten, happily playing with a ball of wool.

Elsewhere, Worf pits his wits against Spock and the Maquis Collective. But much like the battles of old against the original Borg, Lore’s version of Starfleet finds itself outgunned. In response, Lore bends the rules of his fabricated universe, triggering a nearby star to go nova—wiping out most of Spock’s fleet, along with every Starfleet vessel in the region… except the Enterprise.

Artwork

Davide Tinti brings some solid art to the table in this book. Standout moments include the panels where we see Sisko, Kahless, and Beverly Crusher stealing the Phoenix. Just before that, there’s a great little sequence where Zephram Cochrane has given up on ever launching his warp ship—until Lore shows up for a surprise visit. Also fun is the short run of panels showing Data getting completely distracted by video footage of Spot as a kitten, playing with a ball of wool. I’m guessing there’s a whole other story behind how Sisko got his hands on that footage.

Overall

Another fun issue that dives into the intriguing origins of this universe’s version of the Maquis—a Borg collective that was actually defeated by the Vulcans, who somehow combined their katra and used that energy to overcome the Borg. We also find out the fate of Deanna Troi in this reality: she’s a prisoner of Lore, along with only five other surviving members of the Betazoid race.

I’m looking forward to reading part three and seeing what other changes Lore has made to this twisted universe.
