In Review: Star Trek: Annual 2024

Synopsis: In this 2024 Star Trek Annual, With no one but himself to blame for his brother’s sudden escape during the Klingon Day of Blood, Lieutenant Commander Data sheds his Starfleet uniform for an ensemble inspired by none other than Sherlock Holmes to track down Lore’s whereabouts…and figure out what sinister plans he’s been scheming. With the one and only Miles O’Brien as his Watson at his side, there is no mystery that DETECTIVE DATA can’t solve!

The Story

Set after the events seen in Day of Blood. Lieutenant Commander Data has left Starfleet to hunt his brother Lore down and stop him from going through with his latest nefarious scheme. Along the way Data recruits his old friend Chief O’Brien and during the course of the mystery, they are joined by Geordie LaForge who is using this mission as a means to test Project Jellyfish, which is a new ship he has been developing with the Vulcan’s.

The mystery takes them to the Orian Homeworld where they pick up on Lore’s trail of breadcrumbs.

 Rachael Stott takes on the art responsibilities in this special annual and produces some brilliant panels. I loved the sleek design of the new ship that Geordie is testing and I also loved the panels where Data physically threatens their Orian contact in order to force information out of her. Overall Stott does a great job of capturing the mood and vibe of the various locations that feature in this book. 

Overall

This annual works beautifully as a prequel to the events we recently read about in issue 22 of the regular Star Trek comic. It explains how Lore managed to lure Data into his latest scheme, which involves some pretty big ambitions such as destroying the universe.

Overall. Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing do a great job of capturing the voices of these well-known Star Trek characters. As a fan of TNG and DS9, I was thrilled to see Chief O’Brien get a bit of a role in this story.
