Synopsis: The painful events of the past meet the brutal events of the present as Space Ghost and Metallus clash — and while these titans do battle, Space Ghost’s young allies learn the shocking secrets behind their mentor’s tragic history!
The Story
When a Federation spaceship comes under attack by Metallus, who seeks a deadly bomb onboard, Space Ghost and his team rush to their aid. However, as Space Ghost confronts Metallus, memories of his wife and child—killed by Metallus—consume him, fueling a desire for revenge. When Metallus seizes the Federation ship, Space Ghost follows in pursuit, leaving Jace and Jan behind.
With Space Ghost gone, Jace and Jan try to uncover what happened to him. They come across an old robot head floating in space, which Jace decides to activate. The head not only connects to Metallus but also streams a live feed of Metallus’s battle with Space Ghost. As they watch the fight unfold, the kids are given a chilling account of Metallus’s dark and destructive past.
The Artwork
Jonathan Lau once again delivers fantastic artwork in this issue. The brief flashback sequence depicting Metallus’s attack on Space Ghost’s homeworld is especially striking, vividly showing us the devastating events that set everything in motion. This scene sets the stage beautifully for the intense showdown between Metallus and Space Ghost. One standout moment is a powerful shot of Metallus towering over Space Ghost, who is flung backward from the force of one of Metallus’s brutal blows—a perfect visual for the high-stakes energy of their clash.
Overall
David Pepose does an excellent job of updating Space Ghost for modern audiences while staying true to the character’s origins and values. I especially love that we’re finally getting a glimpse into the events that shaped our hero and led him to become the space vigilante we all know and love. I can’t wait to see what the next issue has in store.
