In Review: Obey Me #1

Synopsis: Sent to retrieve a soul from a debtor, Vanessa & Monty team up again, exploring the dilapidated streets of the Slums, currently taken over by the Vikers, a dangerous gang. This isn’t a regular collection job, as it seems this debtor managed to pawn his soul to two powerful demons, so there is a conflict brewing over it. Vanessa and Monty need to stay on their toes, as another Demon + Hellhound duo is on the trail of the target and it seems both duos are on a collision course.

Review: V and Monty have to compete against another soul hunter.

The Story

Continuing on in a similar style to the first story. This second installment of Obey Me sees Vanessa still getting used to working with Monty and to that end. Monty has had to move in with her, which causes a little issue with the sleeping arrangements.

Their latest mission sees them having to take out a gang leader, but this time they have competition from another Demon and his Hellhound, which makes for an interesting dynamic. Mario Mentasti has a great deal of fun with the banter between Monty and Vanessa, which provides plenty of chuckles.

The Artwork

The artwork from Ben Herrera continues to suit the comics rather bloody storylines. I particularly enjoy how he draws Monty the Hellhound who undergoes an interesting evolution by the close of this issue.

Overall

This issue continues the simplistic, but effective narrative style, that we saw in last months issue 0. It’s basically a buddy cop style with quick and sharp dialogue and plenty of funny one-liners during the various fights in the story.

Ben Herrera’s art continues to provide some snappy and fun imagery, which works seamlessly well with Mario Mentasti’s narrative style and snappy dialogue.

I look forward to the next issue, which I hope will give us a bit more of a story arc as opposed to the one-shot style we have seen thus far.
