Synopsis: In this final issue of My Date With Monsters. Risa and Genka meet at last, but it’s rather difficult to have love in the air when the air is so thoroughly stuffed with chaos and the blaring alarms of a major monster breakout! Plus, Risa uncovers the true secret of the nightmares, a secret that will rock the very foundations of her belief in this world, and the ones beyond.
The Story
Picking up from the last issue. Risa and Genka have finally met, but first impressions are not that brilliant. However, the two have very little time to get to know each other as Chub and the mares create absolute chaos. As Risa prepares to meet Chub in a final battle. Croak gives her the truth behind the origins of the mares. An origin that dates back to before humanity and rocks the foundations of Risa’s belief in the world and the worlds beyond.
Meanwhile, while her mother fights for the survival of humanity. Her daughter Machi enjoys her date with Henry.
The Artwork
Andy MacDonald continues to rock the artwork and delivers some brilliant panels in this final issue. We get some nice images of Croak munching on mares as well as a truly brilliant depiction of Risa’s fight with Chub. But one of the funniest images comes up when Henry suggests to Machi that Dogs should bread with Turtles to get a longer life expectancy. In short, the image in his sketchbook of a Dog with a Turtle Shell on its back is a laugh-out-loud moment.
Overall
Paul Tobin brings My Date With Monsters to a satisfying conclusion. The story comes to a close and the good guys or maybe bad guys depending on your point of view, win the day. However, the big revelation within the story does give Risa some food for thought and has her asking if she can ever be truly happy? Will she get together with Genka? That much is left open.
