In Review: Motherland: Fort Salem (S3 – EP9) But I Don’t Even Have a Dress…

This episode is a great setup and foreshadowing for next week's finale, which will be the second part of the Revolution stories that was set up in last year's finale.

Synopsis: In But I Don’t Even Have a Dress… Abigail, Raelle, Tally and Scylla face their fates at a government trial.

The Story

Having turned themselves over to the authorities in last week’s show. The Bellweather Unit finds themselves on trial for crimes that they did not commit as they partake in a kangaroo court that has been put together by President Silver and the Camarilla. Luckily for them, President Kelly Wade turns up with M at the 11th Hour, and Silver is taken into custody along with his camarilla cohorts. All charges against Abigail, Raella, Tally, and Scylla are dropped and wedding plans are made.

However, it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. As Alban Hearst is still at large and has attacked Fort Salem and has managed to access the room where the mycelium wall is.

The Acting

Taylor Hickson gets to stretch her acting chops as we see Raella make a stand and tell her story during the court scene, which is kind of on the short side. No matter, Hickson’s performance during this scene is compelling and an expression of the journey that her character has been on throughout the series.  We also see the return of Sheryl Lee Ralph as President Wade. She has a really strong scene with Kandyse McClure’s Nicte when she makes the former Spree leader accountable for her actions.

Also, putting on quite the show is Bob Frazer as Alban Hearst. The scene where he rescues Silver and then goes on to take Fort Salem and slit Izadora’s throat brings new meaning to the words menacing. You can tell that Frazer is having shedloads of fun while playing the villain.

Overall

This episode is a great setup and foreshadowing for next week’s finale, which will be the second part of the Revolution stories that was set up in last year’s finale. However, I do have a few minor issues. Firstly, we never saw how Anacostia and Nicte rescued President Wade. Though to be fair it did get a little foreshadowing at the start of the story where we see M telling Wade that they have no more food left and are snowed in pretty bad. But I’d have liked to have seen how their rescue got played out.

Secondly, I felt the trail was a little rushed.

Aside from those two minor niggles. I really enjoyed the episode and liked where it left off. As next week’s episode will most likely see Tally and her role as custodian of the first song get a big part to play. But what of Alder’s search for the final piece of a song? I’m really looking forward to seeing where that goes.
