Jayna grapples with her torn loyalties as Seg fights for survival within the heart of Black Zero.

Synopsis: Jayna grapples with her torn loyalties as Seg fights for survival within the heart of Black Zero.

Review: Picking things up from last week. Jayna is agonizing over whether or not she should sacrifice her own honor in order to save her daughter Lyta from execution.

This episode really explores House Zod and shows us how Jayna rose to become the fearless soldier she is and the level of training and sacrifice she had to go through. Ann Ogbomo puts in a brilliant performance as the torn Jayna who has to align herself and the house of Zod with House Vex in order to save her daughter from being executed.

Elsewhere. Seg El manages to escape Black Zero and in so doing rescues a woman and takes her back to her people. It turns out that these people worship the ice goddess and are extremely fearful of House El. Despite these fears, they patch Seg up and provide him with oxygen so he has a chance of surviving the Outlands.

This was a really solid episode which gave us a lot of background information about House Zod but also moved the story arc along nicely. We do not get to see the voice of Rao this week, which is a little disappointing given that he was in the process of being taken over by one of Brainiac’s devices in the last episode, but that isn’t to say that this episode does not come with a twist. And that twist is the true identity of the leader of Black Zero.

Overall. A solid outing, which builds on the show’s mythology and adds a few more twists to the story. We get some very strong acting performances and we also get to see Lyta and Jayna’s familial relationship take somewhat of a turn for the worst.
