WAR MAY BE HELL — BUT KONG IS THE DEVIL!
HELL

Synopsis: WAR MAY BE HELL — BUT KONG IS THE DEVIL! Deep in the jungles of Skull Island, the crew of U-184 survives (as best they can) under the constant threat of grisly death, ferocious prehistoric predators, and, never far behind them… KONG! The pressure mounts as they are steadily overtaken by fear, violence, and disease — but hope flickers in the distance! Will they find the strength to persevere? Or will their bones be added to the endless cascade of human remains that Skull Island leaves for posterity?

The Story

In this fourth issue. The Captain’s diary entries become darker and darker as he and his men have just faced Kong for the first time. As they run toward Skull Mountain The Captain and his men struggle as the looming figure of Kong hovers over them. They are being toyed with by the great ape. Making matters worse is that one of the Captain’s best soldiers is dying. He is being eaten from the inside out and can’t go on. So all there is for him to do is sacrifice himself to give his Captain and the other men a fighting chance to survive. Is there an escape from the island? What will kill these soldiers first? Kong or the Island?

The Artwork

Tommasso Bianchi and colorist James Develin put in a brilliant shift on this issue as they get to give us several stunning images of King Kong in all of his ape glory. The image of Kong picking up one of the soldiers and making a happy meal out of him is easily something I could see happening in a movie. Also good is the imposing image of Skull Mountain in the distance. To sum up. This art team is knocking it out of the park.

Overall

Alex Cox is doing a fantastic job with this book. I love how he has humanized a group of hardened German Soldiers from the First Great War and made me like and admire them. I continue to love how Cox has used the Captain Diarie entries to tell the story and I am wondering how this story will end. Will the Captain make it off the Island or will he be added to the already plentiful collection of skulls on the island? I don’t know the answer to that, but can’t wait to find out.
