In Review: Killjoys – It Takes a Pillage

Synopsis: In what has to be the worst family reunion, D’avin, John, their father Marris and Jaq find themselves pinned by a silica storm in the family bunker as they fight off Hullen operatives hell-bent on capturing Jaq for The Lady. Dutch risks her life in order to uncover the secrets of the spore.

Review: This episode pretty much sees Johnny going after his brother and Jaq while Dutch with the help of Zeph try to figure out the spore, which Dutch picked up last week. We see lots of drama and some fun moments as the Jacobi boys get to reconnect with their father.

The Story

The central premise in this episode is Dutch trying to figure out the Spore while Johnny goes off in search of his brother and Jaq, but we wind up getting so much more as the story slowly unfolds.

In terms of the Spore. Dutch with some help from Zeph are trying to figure out why it is likely to be the only thing that can stop The Lady, but Dutch is also very preoccupied and concerned for Johnny, D’avin and Jaq. She also maybe feels a little guilty for maybe pushing Jaq a little too hard with her training, which was the reason for D’avin taking the boy away in the first place. Dutch’s preoccupation damn near sabotages Zeph’s efforts with the Spore, which forces the resident science nerd to think out the box and save them both.

Meanwhile, on the planet. We get to see a shed load of drama as D’avin, Johnny and Jaq reconnect with Maris who was a drunk when they last saw him but is now as much of a liability while he’s sober. We get some funny moments as Maris calls D’avin by a pet name that he used to have and the three hash things out. It’s fair to say that things just get a whole lot more dysfunctional as the three take on the Hullen and an ex-girlfriend of Johnny comes into play.

The Acting

Luke Macfarlane puts in a standout performance as he clashes with his father while also struggling to keep Jaq safe. We also see fantastic performances from Hannah John-Kamen and Kelly McCormack who have some brilliant dialogue as Zeph and Dutch try to figure things out.

Overall

Although this is very much a holding episode to build us up to the season finale. It did provide some fantastic drama and some humor too. And we got to see D’avin and Jaq brought back into the fold.
