The Stories
Featuring three tales from the worlds of Jim Henson, this book kicks off with a festive story from Fraggle Rock. The gang is preparing for a holiday celebration and decides to help Boober bake the biggest pie ever. However, they secretly aim to improve the pie, as they’ve been humoring Boober for years by pretending to enjoy his less-than-stellar creations. This lighthearted story is full of fun moments and concludes with the Fraggles creating a charming new tradition.
The second story shifts to Farscape, where the crew of Moya is looking for ways to pass the time during a 72-arn journey. After tossing around ideas, they decide on a three-lap race between Crichton and Aeryn, with the rest of the crew placing bets on the outcome. This playful tale captures the spirit of the crew’s camaraderie and rivalry.
The third and final story is the first chapter of a new saga set in the world of The Dark Crystal. Here, the Skeksis known as the Conqueror enlists twin Gelflings to guard his new home. However, he has secretly promised his fellow Skeksis that he will use the Gelflings for his experiments. Complications arise when the Conqueror grows unexpectedly fond of his new guardians, setting the stage for an intriguing and emotional conflict.
The Artwork
The various art teams on this book brilliantly capture the spirit and visuals of the different Jim Henson TV shows featured within its pages. Max Sarin and Lisa Moore deliver exceptional work on Fraggle Rock, perfectly recreating the vibrant visuals and chaotic energy of the show.
Carola Borrelli and Gloria Martinelli bring the world of Farscape to life in a fast-paced story that never slows down. I especially enjoyed the playful banter between Chiana and Ka D’Argo as they bet on the race’s outcome. The art team excelled in portraying the characters’ emotions through expressive facial details.
Countandra and Valentina Pinto truly rise to the challenge of illustrating and coloring the world of The Dark Crystal. The rich visuals and atmosphere they create are stunning, and I can’t wait to see what this talented duo achieves in the second part of the story.
Overall
The writers of this Jim Henson Anthology comic do a fantastic job of capturing the fun and excitement of the worlds they create. Shannon Watters perfectly captures the spirit of Fraggle Rock with a simple yet entertaining story that ends on a delightful note. The only thing missing was an adventure with Uncle Traveling Matt, but I’m hopeful we’ll see that in future issues.
Jill Tew delivers a lively tale from the Farscape universe, pitting Crichton against Aeryn in a race while the Moya crew places bets. It’s a lighthearted story with a satisfying conclusion.
Seanan McGuire contributes a compelling story from the world of The Dark Crystal, skillfully balancing the light and dark themes that are such a hallmark of the series.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories in this anthology and can’t wait to see what the second issue has in store next month.
