Synopsis: THE ONE TRUE KING RETURNS! And he’s here to exterminate the witchbreed! King Arthur and his army turn Otherworld into a battlefield—again. Backed into a corner, Betsy Braddock makes a desperate choice that will reshape the realm—and mutantkind—forever. The fate of the Starlight Citadel is at stake, and if the Citadel falls…so falls all reality.
Picking up from the last issue. King Arthur has returned and joining him on his mission to take the Citidel is an army of Furies. While Merlyn uses Anti-magic to shut down the Citadel’s defenses. Arthur’s Furies target the Captain Britain Corps. This strategic move by Arthur and Merlyn forces Betsy to pull the Captain Britain Corps out, which ultimately leaves her with little choice but to confront King Arthur so she can buy time for Excalibur to rescue Saturnyne.
Marcus To gets rather a lot of action beats to draw in this issue. The best of which is Betsy Braddock minus her Captain Britain Armour battling King Arthur. This series of panels comes toward the final few pages, which sees Betsy having to take some quite desperate measures in order to keep everyone safe. But those last few pages where we see Merlyn on horseback banishing Betsy and Saturnyne from Avalan is awesome.
THE ONE TRUE KING RETURNS! is a fantastic issue that continues this story brilliantly. I love how we are seeing Merlyn and Arthur portrayed in a completely different light to what we have gotten used to. I also loved the duel between Betsy and King Arthur as we are basically seeing Betsy take on the old King without the magic of the Citidel to back her up.
The final few pages are breathtaking and leave us with a fantastic cliffhanger. But as we get reminded of in the issue. Betsy Braddock always comes back.
