Synopsis: KINGDOMS OF BLOOD! The ten kingdoms of Otherworld must decide: Are Excalibur heroes of the realm, or witchbreed to be put to the stake? The peace brought to Otherworld by their X OF SWORDS victory comes to an end.
Kingdoms of Blood sees things get really bad for Betsy and her mutant allies. Having returned to the Citadel after a visit to the Vampires and Death himself. Betsy launches her defense of the Captain Britain Corps and the three Captain Britains who are on trial. However, a visit from Merlyn who brings King Arthur with him escalate matters when Betsy goes to parlay.
Marcus To proves that he has undead blood in his veins as he illustrates some pretty cool-looking vampires for this issue. The opening pages where we meet the Countex Oublia and Countex Oscra are really dramatic and appropriately gothic. I really appreciate how the look of these vampire characters mirrors the look of the classic Nosferatu. I also enjoyed the closing few pages where Betsy and her team prepare to battle King Arthur. And boy Shogo the Dragon is looking more and more fierce with every new issue.
Tini Howard continues to weave an interesting and fun story. I’ve really enjoyed the inclusion of Merlyn and now King Arthur. Though King Arthur being the bad guy in this is something I am not sure about. Hopefully, Betsy and her team are able to make him see reason. As I suspect Merlyn’s influence on Arthur is a huge part of what will wind up resolving this story arc. Furthermore, I’m finding Merlyn being such a closed-minded character to be a little disturbing. However, I do realise that art. Even when it comes to comics is rather subjective. And I am kind of enjoying how this book is challenging some of my pre-conceived ideas when it comes to the King Arthur legends.
