THE CALL OF DOOM

Synopsis: THE CALL OF DOOM! As guardians of the gate, Excalibur has sworn to safely escort those who quest to the Otherworld within, but their duties are tested to their limits when DOOM returns to Avalon.

The Story

Victor Von Doom pays Betsy and her crew a visit as he is looking to go to otherworld in order to retrieve something from Morgan Le Fey’s castle. Betsy and her team insist on escorting Doom to Morgan Le Fey’s old castle. But when they arrive they find that it has vanished. It has been stolen via magical forces. So, now Betsy must escort Doom to the marketplace and help him broker a deal. However, as a deal is struck the team comes under attack by the Furies.

Artwork

Marcus To gets to have some fun in this issue as he gets to draw perhaps one of Marvel’s most iconic villains in Victor Von Doom. There’s a really nice image toward the end of this issue where Doom is holding what appears to be Morgan Le Fey’s castle but in miniature. I also loved the panels in which the Furies are attacking. Particularly the sequence in which Betsy is locked in swordplay with one of them.

Overall

THE CALL OF DOOM! does a great job of bringing Victor Von Doom into the story. I particularly enjoyed reading how arrogant he was toward Betsy. Often speaking to her in such a way that he was letting her know that she is an inconvenience to him. The sequence where Doom is trying to broker a deal at the market is pretty funny. Especially given the fact that it is a situation in which he doesn’t have the upper hand.

Overall. This is a really fun issue that offered up a few laughs as well as some nice action beats.
