Monsterland

Synopsis: This month in Monsterland, Elvira’s arch-enemy, Vlad the Impaler — the original Count Dracula — is raiding the Multiverse of Movies to kidnap Famous Monsters, and now it’s Frankenstein’s turn! Can Elvira stop him before he makes off with Karloff? And what’s Vlad got planned with this Monster Army he’s building?

The Story

Having agreed to work with Agent Grant and track Vlad the Impaler in the last issue. Elvira now finds herself in the classic James Whale production of Frankenstein and is wondering where Vlad could be. After a brief tussle with The Frankenstein Monster. Elvira has an epiphany. What if Vlad is going after Dr. Frankenstein and not the monster? That way he could make lots of monsters. Armed with this notion Elvira sets about gatecrashing Dr. Frankenstein’s wedding in hopes of getting to him before Vlad the Impaler can.

Artwork

Kewber Baal continues to produce some great artwork. Much like the last issue. I love how the artist has managed to replicate the same Black and White colour and texture that you’d see if you watched these old classic horror films. As I remember watching a lot of the films used in this story back in the 1980s when they were shown late on Friday nights on Channel 4. It will be interesting to see what Baal does with the next issue, which will see Elvira gatecrashing An American Werewolf in London. Hopefully, we get to see the county pub scene that happens just before David gets bitten.

Overall

This second issue of Elvira in Monsterland delivers the laughs and whacky plot twists that we have all come to love and know from David Avallone. I really enjoyed some of the meta moments where we saw the movie characters break characters to talk with Elvira. The fun of those kinds of moments never gets old. I mean Karloff in full monster makeup enjoying a cup of Earl Grey Tea just feels so right.
