Synopsis: In Earthdivers. When Indigenous survivors Tad, Sosh, Emily, and Yellow Kid plotted to reverse the apocalypse by stopping the creation of America, their wildest dreams couldn’t have prepared them for the consequences of interfering with history. Now the mission to kill Christopher Columbus comes to a close, but whose blood will spill when the Santa Maria finally hits shore? And where—when—will the desperate time travelers go when their efforts in 1492 backfire?
The Story
In 1492 Columbus is getting closer to landing in The Americas. However, Tad is determined to fulfill his mission to kill Columbus and makes a last-ditch effort to do so. Knowing that Sailers in the 15th Century could not Swim. Tad looks to attack Columbus’s boat from the water. The plan backfires as Columbus’s men managed to subdue Tad and tie him up with a bunch of other people on the Nina. Now Tad must do his best to escape and catch up with and kill Columbus before he makes landfall.
Elsewhere, in the future Sosh is struggling with the fact that children have been killed because of their time traveling. Making matters worse is the fact that things have not changed that much with the death of Columbus. Which has Sosh and the rest wondering what they need to do in order to have a better America for the native people. And how do they go about making it without innocents getting killed?
Artwork
Davide Gianfelice and Joana Lafuente continue to pull off some great visuals as Earthdivers’ regular two artists. I loved the panels in which we see Tad creating a new mast for Nina so he can catch up with Santa Maria and get Columbus. The final panels of the book show us the absolute carnage that happens after Tad fulfills his mission. The imagery of Columbus’s crew taking revenge on the natives for the death of their leader is brutal.
Overall
This first story arc of Earthdivers comes to a thrilling end and we quickly learn about how Tad’s actions in 1492 impacted the lives of Sosh, Emily and Yellow Kid. So it will be interesting to see what they decide to do next when they engage in a mission that will take place in 1776.
