Sea Devils

Synopsis: In Storm of the Sea Devils The Fourth Doctor, Harry Sullivan, and Naomi Cross return in two new stories…

In the first, a businessman in Calcutta requires medical aid, so UNIT have decided to send him a doctor. Unfortunately, when Harry and Naomi arrive on site they find a different Doctor has got there ahead of them.

In the second, the Doctor, Harry, and Naomi have arrived on a luxury resort world where custom-made holidays are provided for every visitor. Their minds are scanned and their ideal getaway is planned.

Review: Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures Series 13: Storm of the Sea Devils is the prequel box set listeners have been waiting for. We finally find out how the Fourth Doctor reconnects with Harry Sullivan and meets Naomi Cross.

Story

“Storm of the Sea Devils” by David K Barnes gives listeners all the sea devil tropes in a more exotic location. Additionally, we get extremely satisfying parallel relationship story lines. Moreover, we get some unapologetic twists on Bond villainy.

Most importantly, however, Barnes lovingly establishes the team of Harry Sullivan and Naomi Cross. Developing their bond out of sequence makes their UNIT and Seventh Doctor adventures even more meaningful.

“Worlds Beyond” by Robert Khan and Tom Salinsky is a masterclass in ambiguity. It also showcases each member of the Tardis team to full advantage.

Acting

As usual, Tom Baker is superb. His supreme happiness permeates every syllable of every scene.

For her part, Eleanor Crooks continues to elevate Naomi’s spunk and competence to 11.

That said, Christopher Naylor continues to be a stand-out treat. His take on Harry is heartwarming near perfection.

The entire guest cast was excellent. However, I must single out Silas Carson. He makes Ramesh Kamal more than the standard Bond villain homage.

Overall

Thank you, Big Finish. Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures Series 13: Storm of the Sea Devils is marvelous. I’m looking forward to the next set of tales in June.
