In Review: Doctor Who (S1 – EP1) Space Babies

Ruby learns the Doctor's amazing secrets when he takes her to the far future.

Synopsis: In Space Babies, Ruby learns the Doctor’s amazing secrets when he takes her to the far future. There, they find a baby farm run by babies. But can they be saved from the terrifying bogeyman?

The Story

When the Doctor and Ruby land on a spaceship in the far future they find themselves confronted by a bogeyman who scares them into taking the lift to the upper decks. As they make their way to the ship’s bridge they find that it is being operated by a crew of Space Babies who have seemingly learned to speak and have developed the abilities to reason. While speaking to on of the babes the Doctor learns that the adults abandoned the ship about six years ago and a Nanny has been looking after the little babes since.

As they did a little deeper. The Doctor and Ruby meet a woman called Jocelyn who has been tending to the needs of the little ones by changing nappies and feeding them via a schedule on the ship’s computers. While pondering why he and Ruby were so scared of the Bogeyman. Ruby suggests that it’s a children’s story that has manifested somehow. When they eventually manage to access the ship’s computers The Doctor learns that the Bogeyman is a bogeyman in that it is a conscious life form that has formed out of Baby snot, which Jocelyn has been collecting whenever she has order the computer to blow the noses of the little ones.

The Acting

Unlike his predecessor, Ncuti Gatwa convinces me immediately that he is The Doctor, which is a credit to his acting abilities and writing. One thing that stood out for me was how the Doctor seemed to scare a little easier than normal. I suspect this will get explained sooner as opposed to later. Millie Gibson is fantastic as Ruby Sunday and seems to have a mysterious quality to her which suggests that this companion is not going to be a regular companion. I’m getting some rather strong Clara vibes about her, but I suspect she could be another Time Lord.

A quite fun opening episode with a fairly straightforward story to get the ball rolling. Solid performances from all the actors involved and a wonderfully childish concept for the bogeyman with it being a snot monster.

The snot monster reminded me of the mutton vindaloo beast from Red Dwarf. Loved when Eric had his little toy sword going to fight the monster!

Except I don’t think my regular weekend pint of larger will kill the Bogeyman. But it zapps a Vinderloo beast every time. Especially if you is having Larger Flavours Ice Cream.
