Cross to Bear

Synopsis: In Cross To Bear. Jack the Ripper was never caught because no one was looking for him in the Wild West…No one accept The Order. An organization made up of the descendants of Crusaders sworn to eradicate the unnatural, The Order will stop at nothing to fulfill the pledge their forefathers made, even if it means crossing the ocean or a line or two…

The Story

Simon and his team have tracked Jack The Ripper from Whitechapel to Boston. However, when Simon leads a raid to captor the murderer. He winds up losing all of his team. Now on his own, he continues the search for the killer and the trail leads him to Tombstone where he has a tense meeting with his older brother Edgar. Of course, Simon tries to persuade his brother to join him but ultimately fails.

The Artwork

Sinisa Banovic does some fantastic work here. I loved the use of dark colours and shadow in the panels where Simon finds that his team has been savagely killed. Also, the panels where we see the note saying “Do Not Fail Again” were brilliantly eery. I also loved the panel where Simon and Edgar greet each other and we see a group of Templar Knights in their background.

Overall

Marko Stojanović does a brilliant job of setting this story up. I liked how he introduces us to Simon as he explains the events as they transpired, which leads us up to his trip to Tombstone. I also like how he’s not given us too much information on The Order or its origins. As I am hoping that will get teased out over the next few issues.

Overall Cross To Bear gets off to a pretty solid start as we get a solid idea of the type of character that Simon is. Hopefully, we’ll get more on his older brother Edgar in future issues as I found him to be a rather compelling character. I also liked how it is hinted that The Ripper might well have been a member of the Order.

In closing. I’m looking forward to the next issue.
