Synopsis: Conan the Cimmerian and Bêlit, Pirate Queen of the Black Coast, are in their prime, enjoying a life of decadence and debauchery, but a flagrant flash of wealth brings some unwelcome attention from thieves with a taste for danger and agents from Stygia on a dark mission for their serpent god.
The Story
Having arrived at the bustling port of Kyros, Conan and his lover, Bêlit, the Pirate Queen, seek some much-needed rest and recreation in one of the port’s many lively establishments. However, their peace is short-lived when a band of thieves attempts to rob them. After swiftly besting the thieves in combat, Conan and Bêlit prepare to execute their leader, but she unexpectedly makes them an offer. She reveals her plan to steal a sacred dagger from Stygia and proposes to share the treasure with them if they agree to join forces. While Conan is reluctant and mistrustful, the impulsive and daring Bêlit has other ideas.
Artwork
Danica Brine and Joao Canola deliver fantastic artwork throughout this book. The panels depicting our duo, hooded and walking the streets, perfectly capture the hustle and bustle of a busy port city. A standout moment is the panel where Bêlit dances for Conan; the artist masterfully conveys the sensuality of the dance, which transitions seamlessly into the intimate series of panels where the couple makes love.
In striking contrast, the action scenes showcase how perfectly in sync Conan and Bêlit are when their lives are on the line. The moment where Bêlit’s attacker seems to gain the upper hand near the balcony railing is particularly gripping, evoking a palpable sense of danger.
Overall
Jim Zub kicks off this new story arc, promising exciting adventures with Conan and his Pirate Queen, a character we’ve only seen in flashbacks until now. It will be intriguing to see how this story unfolds as it develops. This is a strong and engaging start.
