In Review: Conan the Barbarian #13 – Frozen Faith Part 1

Synopsis: After leaving Cimmeria filled with wanderlust, a young Conan heads north in search of glory.

What he finds in that cold climate will change his outlook forever, setting him on the path that will make him a legend.

The Story

In this new story arc we see Conan questioning weather or not Crom the god of the mountain is real. To that end, he traverses the Frozen North in hopes that he’ll find some answers about God and faith. While in the Frozen lands Conan has plenty of time to contemplate his life and purpose between hunting for food. To that end we get some interesting flashbacks in which we see a young Conan asking the elders of Cimmeria about Crom while he is being trained to become a warrior.

Artwork

 Roberto De la Torre  and Diego Rodriguez do a fantastic job with the art throughout this book. This pairing truly managed to capture the bone-chilling cold of the frozen north as well as the harsh landscape in which Conan is navigating. I loved the sequence of panels where Conan stalks and hunts down a Bear. The page in which we see Conan carrying the bear across his back is fantastic and really evokes the sense of triumph that he’d likely be feeling after such a savage fight. 

Overall

This new story arc offers up some interesting questions as we see Conan questioning the faith and beliefs of his tribe while he goes off in search of his purpose and sets out to test himself against the harsh elements of the Frozen North.

It’s a story very much about the will to survive and how frightening life and death-situations can push a person beyond their limits. Overall, this is a great start and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.
