Synopsis: Conan has travelled far and seen much in his legendary journeys, but nothing he has experienced thus far can prepare him for a quest to lands beyond to answer dark riddles of the past.
Unexpected allies await, fierce enemies loom, and the strange power of the Black Stone stirs in The Age Unconquered!
The Story
This final chapter of the story arc sees Conan face Thulsa Doom who has managed to resurrect himself by using the power of the black stone and projecting his magic forth to manipulate things in the material world. Having used his powers to manipulate Kull into visiting the island where his remains are buried. Thulsa Doom seizes the opportunity to spring forth from his coffin and sets about killing Kull to end his family lineage, which is a line of kings. Thankfully, Thulsa Doom is not aware of Conan who has been working alongside Brule to try and keep Kull from harm. Initially, Conan has an advantage over Thusla Doom. Nonetheless, the fight rages for some time.
Artwork
We get some fantastic artwork from the team of artist and colorist Diego Rodriguez. I really loved the various close-ups we are given of Thulsa Doom’s skeleton face and the way in which Rodriguez makes clever use of the colors while playing with light and shadow.
Overall
Jim Zub brings this story arc to a brilliant end but leaves just enough unanswered to carry Conan forward on future adventures. I enjoyed how the writer used the character of Yag-Kosha and Conan’s discussions with him as a means to foreshadow an excellent plot twist that initially gives our favorite anti-hero a substantial advantage over Thulsa Doom.
The dialogue between Doom and our favorite barbarian is brilliantly done and written so clearly that I could hear the character’s voices in my head while I was reading.
Overall. An excellent conclusion to what has been a brilliant story arc.
