Synopsis: In every city of light, there’s a place of near-total darkness where creatures of the night linger in the sewers beneath. Surrounded by bones of the hunted, this is the Beyond. Terry McGinnis comes face-to-face with Killer Croc, but what happens when all Croc sees is his next meal? He’s hungry, and angry, and Batman’s looking delicious.

The Story

Having persuaded Kyle to be his guide of under Gotham in the last issue. Batman and Kyle have a run-in with a very hungry and very angry Killer Croc. This is a surprise to Terry as his predecessor Bruce Wayne had always assumed Croc to be dead. It appears he was wrong and further to that is the fact that Croc reveals that he is guarding the tomb of a much worse monster. Which begs the question. Could this tomb be where all of Neo Gotham’s children have been taken? What kind of tomb is it? Assuming this to be the case. Batman and his new friend Kyle decide to go deeper into under Gotham.

Meanwhile, topside in Neo Gotham. Lumos is still using the missing kids as political fuel for his campaign to turn Neo Gotham into the ultimate city of light.

The Artwork

The art team of Max Dunbar and  Sebastian Cheng do a solid job with this issue. Dunbar’s linework brilliantly depicts the look and threat of Killer Croc while Cheng’s colorwork really brings this massive monster to life. The panels where we see Crock trying to capture Batman and Kyle for his lunch are really good and fun to look at. The illustrations of Croc stalking his prey are visceral and have a truly cinematic quality to them. Especially when it comes to the panel where we see Kyke the Catboi work one of his magic spells.

Overall

A really fun issue that does a great job of moving the story forward and ends with a big reveal about who the tomb belongs too.
