In Review: Absolute Batman #3 – Batman and Alfred Face Black Mask’s Allies

Synopsis: Batman and Alfred have formed a tentative alliance, but the Black Mask has some new friends too…and they’re coming to Gotham to wreak absolute havoc. Plus, discover the dark secret that will rock Bruce to his core and make him question everything…

The Story

Picking up from last month, Batman and Alfred are fighting their way through a swarm of Black Mask’s soldiers after escaping a deadly trap. Batman had intentionally walked into it to gather intel and retrieve one of the mysterious masks. Meanwhile, Alfred works to feed Batman critical intelligence about their adversary—a man named Roman Sionis, better known as the Black Mask. Alfred also reveals the devastation Black Mask has caused in other cities around the globe.

Later, after parting ways with Alfred, Bruce Wayne—now out of costume—meets with Edward Nigma, aka the Riddler. Nigma introduces Bruce to his new AI computer/robot, Al. At Bruce’s request, Al explains the true nature of the Black Masks worn by Roman Sionis’s soldiers. The masks not only enhance the wearer’s abilities to aid in their crimes but also serve as a storage system for their Black Coin currency—a sinister economy built around their criminal activities.

As the story unfolds, flashbacks reveal a young Bruce Wayne spending time on Gotham’s rooftops with Selina Kyle, adding layers to the conspiracy. The stakes escalate when Black Mask attempts to broker a deal with Batman himself.

The Artwork

Nick Dragotta delivers explosive action sequences right from the start, as Batman and Alfred desperately try to escape a bloodthirsty gang of Black Masks.

I also appreciate the contrast between the comic’s present-day story and the flashbacks to Bruce’s childhood. The introduction of Selina Kyle, already sporting a Catwoman-inspired hoodie, adds an intriguing layer to her character. I’m excited to see what Dragotta brings to the table in the next issue.

Overall

This issue continues to deliver excitement, deepening the mystery and conspiracy that have been building throughout the story. I’m eager to see what unfolds next, especially after that cliffhanger.
