Synopsis: In the battle of self, of Batman versus Batman, there can be only one. Everyone Bruce has ever known, ever cared about, or ever loved will face their ultimate inner demons.

The Story

Picking up where the last issue left off, Batman has been exposed to Scarecrow’s fear toxin and has killed Tim Drake while trying to escape. He manages to make his way to the old Gotham Zoo, where his father died many years ago.

The issue opens with Scarecrow receiving payment from the Joker before returning to his home in the cornfield. Meanwhile, the Robins, led by Deathstroke, have vowed to go after Batman and end him.

Back at the zoo, Martha Wayne catches up with Bruce and gives him what he needs to go after Scarecrow. She obtained it through her connection to the Court of Owls, which, she says, Scarecrow corrupted with his toxin shortly after it formed. Martha also gives Bruce the location of Scarecrow’s home and the means to take on a new identity.

Once the toxin has worn off, Bruce sets out after Scarecrow. He remains in contact with Barbara Gordon, who reveals herself at the end of the issue as the Bat, the Absolute Universe’s version of Batgirl.

Artwork

Nick Dragotta puts in a brilliant shift with the art in this issue. The images of Batman struggling to make his way to safety are compelling, as is the image of Barbara Gordon holding the cowl of her new costume up to her face. The most thrilling artwork comes towards the end, when Batman sorts out Scarecrow and brings him back down to the level of merely scaring crows.

Overall

This is where The Strawman arc really opens up, as we learn why the Court of Owls seems so divided and dysfunctional in this version of events. It also gives us a cool introduction to the Bat, a reworking of Batgirl whom I can’t wait to see working alongside Batman in future issues.

The issue also solidifies Alfred’s disillusionment with British intelligence. When he receives new orders, he openly disobeys them and chooses to remain in Gotham.
