In Review: Absolute Batman #10 – Surviving Ark M

Synopsis: Bruce Wayne is trapped within the horrors of Ark M, while his best friend, Waylon Jones, endures unimaginable tortures. But what awaits Batman is far more terrifying than anything either of them has faced before — the true form of Bane is revealed. And it’s how Bane plans to break Batman that will have you, dear reader, bending over backward.

The Story

Picking up from the last issue, Bruce Wayne has been captured and now finds himself a prisoner inside Ark M, subjected to a series of cruel and inhumane experiments. The narrative unfolds through a series of log entries written by the overseeing doctor, who meticulously documents Bruce’s various escape attempts. Unbeknownst to both the doctor and the Prime — also known as Bane — Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, isn’t just trying to escape; he’s also on a mission to rescue his friend, Waylon “Croc” Jones.

Meanwhile, back in Gotham, Martha Wayne is growing increasingly desperate to discover what has happened to her son, who has now been missing for over 90 days.

Nick Dragotta’s artwork really shines in this issue, especially as we explore the twisted halls of Ark M through Bruce Wayne’s various escape attempts. The layout allows us to see quite a lot of the facility, making it feel like a character in its own right. We’re also treated to some well-placed flashback panels that help fill in the blanks around Bruce’s friendship with Waylon. These moments are nicely juxtaposed with their grim present-day situation, adding emotional weight to the story.

The standout panels come late in the issue when Bruce finally locates Waylon — now fully transformed into Killer Croc. The new design for Croc is striking, with just enough of Waylon’s original facial features visible beneath the reptilian makeover to make the transformation feel tragic as well as terrifying.

Overall

This is a solid issue that pulls back the curtain on the cruelty happening within the walls of Ark M. I especially appreciated Martha Wayne’s continued search for Bruce and her tense interactions with former Police Commissioner (and now Gotham Mayor) Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent — a subplot that adds emotional depth and urgency.

Also notable is the clever juxtaposition between a past incident involving Bruce and Waylon, and Bruce’s current efforts to rescue his old friend. It’s a thoughtful narrative choice that adds resonance to their relationship and raises the emotional stakes.

Overall, this was a solid issue that builds nicely on everything we’ve already learned about this alternate take on the Dark Knight. The storytelling continues to layer emotional depth onto Bruce’s journey, while the visual storytelling and world-building inside Ark M keep the tension high.
