(Missoula, Montana): Independent publisher Oneshi Press is preparing to launch War & Horses, an action-packed illustrated novel set in a Wild West–like fantasy world. But this gun-slinging adventure isn’t like most fantasy books: Author Peter Lampasona choreographed its fight sequences using real-world knowledge gained as a combat sports writer, commentator, and judge!
After years of study under such luminaries as Muay Thai and MMA coach Doug Cota, SAMBO master of sport Steve Koepfer, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach Mark Stan, Lampasona transitioned into writing about the world of combat sports. Now, he’s taken his knowledge and turned it toward fiction. Lampasona has written his first novel—War & Horses, including fight scenes he choreographed himself with sparring partners. Illustrator Chris Covelli translated those moves into 3D-rendered models, then into the hard-hitting illustrations that now appear in the book.
In the fights in War & Horses, Lampasona says, “My training with SAMBO competitors Anthony Sansonetti and Jeremy Paiser created the inspiration for the ‘wrestling’ in the action sequences in War & Horses. Jeremy’s moves, in particular, were the inspiration for several fight scenes though Anthony’s more direct style focused on positional dominance played a part in the Triggerman character, himself, especially in War & Horses.”
