Walking Dead pays homage to Escape from NY

Negan's Escape From New York moment featured Snake's modified Mac 10 machine gun in the Season Seven finale.

In the AMC season seven finale episode of Walking Dead entitled, ‘The First Day of the Rest of your Life’, the show’s creative team and producers paid tribute to an iconic moment in science fiction history, by making reference to John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic, Escape from New York. The film starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, Lee Van Cleef as Bob Hauk, Ernest Borgnine as Cabbie, Isaac Hayes as The Duke of New York City and Adrienne Barbeau as Maggie.

In the Walking Dead’s season seven finale there is a large gun battle between Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the three separate communities trying to win their freedom from the post apocalyptic Saviors, in which we see Negan firing a modified Mac 10 with a combination suppressor and scope, which is in actuality a replica of the very same weapon used during part of the film by Russell’s Snake Plissken.

While this is not the first time the Walking Dead’s creative team has paid homage to very cool and geeky pieces of fun horror and/or SciFi movie trivia, it is always fun for any fan to notice when pieces of pop culture make their way into an episode of their favorite genre show.
