Last weekend we lost Glen A. Larson, but in lieu of his passing it seems that the legend that is ‘Battlestar Galactica’ could still continue to live on in the planned movie, which Larson was reportedly involved in putting together.
The question remains as to what form the movie will take. Dark gritty social commentary like with the 2003 re-imagining of Ron D. Moore or a science fiction family drama like the original series was back in the late seventies.
Whatever it winds up being one person still carrying the torch for a ‘Battlestar Galactica’ movie project is Richard Hatch who played Apollo in the original series and terrorist turned politician Tom Zarek in the 2003 reboot.
In a recent interview for Digital Spy the actor expressed his full backing for a movie and said it “have a huge audience”.
“I think a Battlestar movie would be extraordinary,” he said.
“I know they’re talking about it, trying to work on a script – and I think a new movie would probably launch a new Battlestar Galactica series [on television].”
“I don’t think this story has been fully explored,” Hatch said. “It’s a never-ending plethora of dramatic possibilities.
“There’s a vast dramatic topography to explore and the audience can’t get enough – they’re hungry for more.”
The actor also said that he’d very much be up for a role in the movie providing it had some substance to it.
In terms of what I personally would like to see in a movie version of the series. I’d like to see the original mythology for the Cylon’s reincorporated into a new film. This mythology was something that was barely touched on in the classic series and was something that Ron Moore completely chucked out when he went about rebooting Battlestar for the 2003 series.
In the original mythology the Cylon’s were a cybernetic race that had stemmed originally from a lizard like alien, which had been at war with human’s for over an millennia. So I’d be interested to see a film that looks more at the origins of the cylon’s and how they evolved into the more robotic cyborgs that we seen in the classic series. Also what caused the war. That was something else that was never fully made clear in the classic show.
