Synopsis: In ‘Ebb Tide’ Kaetenay has a vision of impending doom. Frankenstien and Jekyll get help from an unlikely foe. The creature gains courage. Vanessa learns an awful truth.
Review: As we draw close to the end of another series. Season Three of ‘Penny Dreadful’ begins to weave all the threads together in the push towards paying off events that we have seen played out.
Vanessa is feeling pretty damn loved up, but her blissful ignorance of who her lover is will not last long.
In America Kaetenay has a vision in which he sees Ethan unite with Vanessa, but far to late. This vision prompts Sir Malcolm, Kaetenay and Ethan to get on the boat back to London double time.
Back in England after having met with Vanessa John Claire aka the creature has a meeting with Vanessa. During this meeting Vanessa tells Claire of her experience with him before he became the creature. She goes on to tell him that he more than anyone deserves to be loved. The tide turns for John Claire in this episode as he reunites with his wife and is once again accepted by the embrace of family.
It is not all happy endings and rose tinted glasses. The tide becomes rough sailing for Vanessa as she receives a visit from Catriona Hartdegen. Catriona helps Vanessa realise the truth about Dracula. During this talk Vanessa realises that her new lover is the enemy.
Lily Falls From On High
The relationship between Lily and Dorian is pretty much at an end. Dorian who is bored of Lily’s revolution sells her out to Frankenstein and Jekyll, but we are left wondering if she can truly be tamed. Prior to Dorian’s betrayal. He does have a moment where he shows the psychotic Justine his true nature.
The Tide Turns For Vanessa And Dracula
With the tide having well and truly turned. Vanessa sets out to kill Dracula, but finds that killing him is not as straightforward as she believes. Although Dracula can be killed when in his human form. Vanessa does not count on just how persuasive and seductive he can be. He gets his first bite.
While at sea Malcolm and Ethan are told by Kaetenay to inform the Captain of their ship to make haste. He says that Vanessa is very near to being under Dracula’s spell.
This episode is the beginning of the close for this current season of the show. We have Vanessa in an even more vulnerable state than she was at the start of the series. And we have Ethan, Malcolm and Kaetenay making haste to try and rescue her.
Aside from the obvious question of whether or not Vanessa can be saved. We are still left wondering just what Ethan’s destiny is and why it is that Kaetenay has adopted him as a son. Does it have anything to do with Vanessa and Dracula? Or is it a story thread that is being set up for season four?
Either way. We are left to ponder these questions and wait for another week to see what will happen. Which for me is what makes ‘Penny Dreadful’ must watch television.
I look forward to seeing how the reunion between Malcolm, Ethan and Vanessa plays out in next week’s episode.
