‘Pacific Rim 2’ has been in development hell for some time now, but it looks like things could gain some fresh momentum with the hiring of ‘Jurassic World’ screenwriter Derek Connolly.
The second ‘Pacifc Rim’ movie, which is to be directed by ‘Daredevil’ showrunner Steven DeKnight and written by Connolly. Guillermo del Toro remains involved in the film series, but will not have as big a creative voice in the project than he did in the first movie, which was very much his baby.
Titled ‘Mechas vs. Monsters’ the movie will focus on a fresh invasion of Kaiju.
Drafts of the films story have already been worked on by del Toro, Zak Penn and Jon Spaihts, and while plot details are being kept under wraps, at one point it was to have been set many years after the original movie and where the monster-fighting robot suits known as Jaegers have become commonplace.
It’s not clear yet as to whether Connolly will be doing a full re-write of the film or is being brought in to develop some story ideas.
Connolly has become one of the go to guys for writing monster movies and started out on ‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ and has since co-written ‘Jurassic World’
The writer has has since worked on ‘Jurassic World 2’ and has impressed Legendary Pictures with the work he has done on the company’s creature-filled ‘Kong: Skull Island’. He also co-wrote ‘Intelligent Life’, DreamWorks’ sci-fi drama that has Lupita N’yongo attached to star.
