Marvel is aiming to dominate all of television, just as it has taken over the movie universe. In the news this week are some tasty tidbits about Agents of S.H.I.E.I.D., Daredevil, Avengers 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Carl “Crusher” Creel, known to Marvel fans as the Absorbing Man in the comics, is coming to to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ in the season premiere Tuesday, September 23. With his ability to absorb the properties of anything he touches, Creel, played by Brian Patrick Wade, will present a challenge for Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team.
Exec producer Jeff Bell said in a recent interview that in the premiere episode, Fitz’s (Iain De Caestecker) fate will go unaddressed “just long enough that you think, ‘Oh my God, really? Aren’t they going to…?!’” — before his fate and his well being is revealed. “The beauty of what [Fitz said to Simmons trapped underwater] is it makes for lots of complicated feelings,” said Bell. “I’d be curious to see how things will be different or the same now.”
Director Phil Coulson turns to people he thinks he can trust to help him rebuild the decimated SHIELD. Agent Isabel Hartley (Lucy Lawless), assassin Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), and Barbara Morse will be recruited in the effort, while Coulson contends with HYDRA, including Daniel “The Kraken” Whitehall (Nick Blood). The effort will take its toll on Coulson.
According to Executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen, “As director, [Coulson will] be faced with some tough decisions, harder decisions than he had to make as an agent. We’ll see the emotional consequences of that and we’ll see the shifts in dynamics between the characters because of that.”
The Defenders: Daredevil
Vincent D’Onofrio, who will be playing Kingpin on the Netflix series, teased that Marvel has a larger plan for the characters appearing in ‘Daredevil.’
“Well, I think they have some kind of plan,” said D’Onofrio. “ I’m not really allowed to discuss what the plan is, but they have a plan. I think the beginning of the plan is series stuff with Netflix, and then they have a bigger plan to branch out, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you specifically what that is.”
According to Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos, the plan for Daredevil, ‘Jessica Jones,’ Luke Cage,’ and ‘Iron Fist,’ is to have all four individual stories culminate in the heroes team up as The Defenders. Whether that happens as a series, a Netflix movie, or a theatrical release, Sarandos said in a recent interview that “It has definitely been talked about.”
“It was really based on the theatrical model of The Avengers,” Sarandos explains. “Could you take another group of characters, The Defenders, and go about it the same way? Normally they do the big movie and then eventually they get to the group origin story. Having 13 hours to tell each of these stories, you can go right to the origin story and the action at the same time.”
As for the tone of Daredevil, Sarandos said “The series will not be afraid to go darker than the film did. What we love about this particular set of heroes is that they’re a little more down to Earth. Costume wise and also in that these are gritty crime stories, more in the streets than in the clouds.”
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
Stellan Skarsgard will reprise his role as naked Dr. Eric Selvig in the second Avengers installment.
”I was naked again,” he reveals. :They called my agent and said, ‘Do you think Stellan will mind being naked?’ My agent laughed his head off. Yeah, I almost insist! Sometimes with a contract you get a nudity clause, which is fantastic. It’s supposed to protect me from having my genitals exploited, which I doubt anybody would make a dime on…”
Guardians of the Galaxy
With four Marvel movies out this summer, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has topped them all, and become the biggest hit of the season, making close to half a billion dollars worldwide. Any who turned out to be the biggest hit of the movie?
Dancing Groot, who now has his own official Funko pop figure, which sadly doesn’t really dance.
