Last year I spoke to creators Jimmy Furlong and Andrew Hartmann about their pulp comic book series ‘Shit Flingers,’ which had perhaps one of the most interesting story pitches I’d ever heard. It would likely cause frogs to hurriedly vacate their boxes and run for cover.
There is no doubt that the title alone will raise the eyebrows and pulses of conservatives everywhere, but if you get beyond that and read the pitch you’ll find a plot and premise that is totally bonkers, but in the best possible way.
The comic book, which is accepting your pledges on Kickstarter is a pulp story in the truest sense and centres on a group of human’s who because of a curse are turned into Monkeys. They wind up working for the church and become a team of anthropomorphic monster hunters.
‘Shit Flingers: Bestiary‘ #1 – #6 collects together 30 original new stories, featuring some of the hottest new talent in comics!
The campaign is for issue one, which will be a whopping 60 pages of all out monkey monster fighting mayhem.
When I spoke to Jimmy and Andrew last year. They both told me that the various issues would span various time periods because the curse makes the heroes long lived.
The full synopsis for the comic is below:
For their part in a terrible crime, a group of 15th Century French soldiers are forever cast out from the world of men when they are each cursed, transformed into a different species of ape by a powerful witch.
Captured by The Inquisition, they are smuggled to Rome and coerced into the Bestiary; a secret organisation located deep beneath what will eventually become the Sistine Chapel.
Led by their new employer, a young Thomas De Torquemada, they begin a new life fighting occult monsters, demons and the heretical enemies of the Church.
Shit Flingers: Bestiary chronicles their adventures from 1453 to 1584.
If this kickstarter is a success Jimmy and Andrew hope to launch the second volume, which is titled Shit Flingers: Fealty and picks the story up in 1584 and moves things on for another hundred years.
Since speaking to both this stories creators last year. I have been a fan of this idea. And I’ve already backed this campaign.
If you are a fan of independent comics and are looking for something that is a little different from the mainstream books provided via DC Comics, Marvel and other commercial comics companies. Then I suggest you give this project a look and consider backing it.
