In Review: XXX: Return Of Xander Cage

Extreme Sports Video Game Style Meets Spy Spoof

Synopsis: When a group of lethal mercenaries steal a hi-tech weapon that poses a global threat, the world needs super-spy Xander Cage. Recruited back into action, Xander leads a team of death defying adrenaline junkies on a mission to save the world.

Review: The third movie in the XXX series hit the home video market a few weeks back and given that I enjoyed the first two films for what they were. I figured I’d give the third instalment a go.

First off. No one watches these movies for the excellent writing of the believably of the stunts. As ever the writing was okay verging of meh and the stunts were crazy and very reliant on the extra zing that CGI offers these days. Some fantastic visuals, but at times the CGI was so obviously video game that it either pulled you out of the moment or had you wondering if the laws of physics could be re -written to that extent. Especially the closing stunt with the small parachute and Cage riding a cargo crate to the ground.

The story barely hangs together amid the fist pumping soundtrack and all the stunts.

Vin Diesel rides the movie out with his tongue firmly in cheek and Donnie Yen provides some impressive martial arts work to the film, but I couldn’t help feeling that it was just a quick cash grab for him. I’ve seen him in much better movies than this.

Much like the two previous films. The story tends to be much more of a spoof in the style of the 1960’s ‘Our Man Flint’ movies. The women are hot and get some decent action scenes and Cage gets a lot of that action too. Much like the late James Coburn in the Flint movies.

If anything. The movie succeeds as a vehicle to expose Canadian actress Nina Dobrev to a wider audience. She had some of the movies most  funny scenes as the awe struck tech support Becky Clearidge.

Overall. the film is not as bad as a lot of its most negative reviews would suggest, but it will not win any awards either.

I signed up for some shallow entertainment. Which is all this movie really offered. So I got what was on the tin and on the most bass level. I enjoyed the ride. Didn’t love it. But didn’t hate it either.

Would I watch it again. Maybe, but it would require at least two beers.
