In Review: The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Howard Shore has been pretty consistent with his music throughout all of the LOTR movies and the Hobbit trilogy and for my money.

The Packaging: The packaging of this special edition comes in a green CD case with the title emblazoned across the front in a really nice font with gold lettering. The digital version has a JPG representation of the cover, which is downloaded with the music when you purchase through iTunes. The gold works really well with the dark green, which is painted in such a way to make it look like it has a leather binding like an old fashioned book.

Review: The music contained on the CD is pretty damned awesome.

Howard Shore has been pretty consistent with his music throughout all of the LOTR movies and the Hobbit trilogy and for my money. In the notes that come with the CD version we learn that Shore pretty much took the same approach to scoring this at his home in New York and passing the music onto Peter Jackson for final approval.

I won’t go to much into detail about this because if you have got the previous soundtracks you will more than likely make this purchase, but the highlights for me are the nostalgic ‘The Return Journey’ and ‘There And Back Again’. Both these tracks seem quite bitter sweet in that it feels like Shore is saying a final goodbye to middle earth, which is a world that he has provided the sound-scape for since ‘Fellowship Of The Ring’.

As a fan of soundtracks. Especially soundtracks that use a full on orchestra. I really enjoyed this final collection of music and especially appreciate how many different emotional beats that this collection of music provides you with.

A nice edition to this are the bonus tracks, which include the song ‘The Last Goodbye,’ which pretty much sums up the themes of friendship and loss, which are dotted throughout the movies. I really enjoyed the lyrics, but as lover of storytelling in songs I was hardly going to hate it.

This collection of music is available now as both a CD or Digital version via Amazon and iTunes.
