Review: Dave Avallone concludes his run on Doc Savage in a blaze of glory, but like everything in life it comes at a cost. In that we lose one of the characters that the story has centred on since the first issue. But its a closure that makes sense given that the character concerned was on loan from history.

The finale duel between Doc Savage and John Sunlight was worth the wait. The verbal sparring being worth the price of admission alone.

Of course it takes the Docs companions to clear out the cannon fodder while Doc and his Cousin sort out John Sunlight.

This run by Dave Avallone has been a hell of a lot of fun.

The writers upbringing and knowledge of the various pulps of yesteryear have really informed his writing and its obvious that he has a lot of love for Doc Savage and that entire universe.

The writer has managed to capture the spirit of the old black and white movie serials and the script for this comic could have easily been made into one of those serials with perhaps the late Buster Crabbe playing the Man Of Bronze.

Once again the artwork by Dave Ocosta is awesome. His visual references to the period, the costumes and the planes come across brilliantly.

His ability to draw the action scenes has been phenomenal. I especially enjoyed the action on Page 11 through 13 of the issue. Which is the penultimate confrontation between the Doc and John Sunlight before the big finale.

The issue partially closes with a poem from Amelia Earhart about courage. It’s a really cool poem and am not sure if it actually is by the late pilot or something that Dave Avallone added to end the issue on a poignant note. Either way its a fantastic poem and a great way to end what I think has been a fantastic adventure.

I hope Dynamite do a bit of arm twisting and get Avallone and Acosta to work on another Doc Savage title. If they do. I’m definitely in.
