In Review: Big Finish: Torchwood: Fall To Earth

David-Lloyd is in top form, and James Goss wrote a script that showcased the man Jack Harkness would grow to love, and why that man would always be more than a “butler.”

Synopsis: The SkyPuncher is the first private spaceflight. But Ephraim Salt’s visionary project has gone horribly wrong – the ship is falling out of the sky and there seems no way to stop it.

Ianto Jones thought the flight would be sabotaged. The only problem is… he’s on board.

Review: Because the conspiracy had to be set up in “The Conspiracy,” the story was necessarily exposition heavy. As a result, the story telling didn’t actually start until this second installment, “Fall To Earth.” What listeners got is a marvelous, dryly witty, and poignant two-hander between Gareth David-Lloyd and Lisa Zahra. David-Lloyd is in top form, and James Goss wrote a script that showcased the man Jack Harkness would grow to love, and why that man would always be more than a “butler.” There is foreshadowing of Ianto’s ultimate fate, but it was not heavy handed. Furthermore, I was glad the episode had a happy ending to contrast the darker shades of Torchwood as a whole.

My favorite nod to the series was when Zeynep sold pet insurance to Ianto to justify continuing the call, and he passed Myfanwy off as an “exotic bird.” My least favorite moment was when Zeynep talked Ianto through applying the tourniquet. It wasn’t internally logical. Every Torchwood agent would know how to apply a tourniquet.

Raissa Devereux became a life-long genre fan at the age of four when she first saw The Wizard of Oz at a screening at Arizona State University. Years later, she graduated from A.S.U. as an English major, History minor, Whovian, and Trekkie. Now a Florida transplant, she loves the opportunity Sci-Fi Pulse has given her to further explore space travel, time travel, masked heroes, gothic castles, and good yarns.

Perfect. Now i´d love a story with Janto (several, actually), and more episodes with Ianto Jones.

Ianto would have known how to apply a tourniquet, but I think he was distracted by the SkyPuncher descending out of control
