At the tail end of last season of ‘Once Upon A Time’ Emma Swan heroically sacrificed herself to the Dark One in order to save a redeemed Regina from having to carry such an evil burden.

Now thanks to the image above, which is courtesy of Entertainment Weekly and ABC. We have our first look at Emma Swan in her new guise as The Dark One.

Executive producer Edward Kitsis said: “Every part of her is fighting her dark urges. What happens when [the darkness] mixes with the lightest magic of all, and will Emma have the strength to fight it?”

Of her transformation into the Dark One, Kitsis added that it “allows [her] to have the freedom to have no inhibitions”.

“We are going to be exploring love and what happens when you use it as a weapon and what are the things that it makes you do. In the past, we’ve said love is the most powerful magic of all. It makes you do many things you normally wouldn’t think you would,” he explained.

It is yet to be revealed how Emma Swans Dark One will differ from Rumpelstiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle), but I’m sure the hardcore fans will have much fun finding out.

Fellow executive producer Adam Horowitz added: “How a Dark One manifests is specific to each person who takes on the mantle. Emma will have her own unique spin on what it means to be a Dark One.”
