Review: A Matter Of Life And Death is a graphic novel comprising of the first five issues of Titan Comics new Eighth Doctor adventures.

The collection is made up of five stories, which are interconnected with a nice little character arc for the Doctors latest companion Josie Day aka Josephine Day.

The doctor meets Josie when he arrives at his old house to find her squatting and making a living for herself as an artist. As things unravel and some of Josie’s paintings of monsters start to come to life. The Doctor learns that Josie is covered in animae particles, which have somehow been triggered by the Doctor’s arrival and brought the monsters to life.

This first mystery being somewhat straightforward for the Doctor and Josie to figure out. The pair wind up having four further adventures, which conclude with them boarding a spacecraft, which is manufacturing new humanoid bodies for the ooooo.o1% who have their brains and memories pulled from them at the moment of death and transferred into new host bodies.

I’ll not spoil the stories for you, but I will say that writer George Mann has done something for Josie, which Steven Moffat never managed to do for Clara. He managed to give closure to Josie’s story arc and do so in such a way that he is still able to keep her around.

The comic adventures contained in the graphic novel are all tied together by a theme, which made it fun to get through.

The artistic landscapes featured in the book are wonderfully drawn by Emma Vieceli. While Hi Fi provides some wonderfully vibrant colours to the mix.

Mann who is someone I have never read before also gives you a really truthful portrayal of the eighth Doctor. While reading I could actually hear Paul McGann’s intonation of dialogue in my head. There is also a wonderful twist that involves a brief appearance of the 12th Doctor during the closing few pages of the book.
