Big Finish Review: Pathfinder Legends – Rise of the Runelords: The Hook Mountain Massacre

The voice work in this episode is as great as ever and special mention has to go to Sunny Ormonde who who seems to be relishing her role as Mammy Guaul. If this were theatre the rest of the cast would be afflicted with some pretty serious spinters due to so much scenery being chewed.

Synopsis: Ezren, Merisiel, Harsk and Valeros answer a desperate call for aid from Hook Mountain. A tribe of ogres has slaughtered the garrison of a small keep, including the famous retired war hero stationed there. The few surviving rangers need the heroes to help them retake the key fortification back. And in the surrounding wilderness, a sinister force is growing.

Review: The fantastic adventures of this group of intrepid mismatched adventures continues to shine as Big Finish’s newest compelling series of audio dramas and this time the stakes are higher than ever.

Continuing on from the last chapter our heroes find themselves faced with yet another army of ogres, but are as yet to meet the nefarious Mammy Graul, who made herself first known to listeners at the close of volume 2.

The impetuous and quick to act Merisiel continues to be my favourite character and the quality of Kerry Skinner’s voice work really makes her one of the most enjoyable characters to listen too.

The storyline for this one is cram packed with action to a point where there is barely time for breath. The sound department continues to excel at selling us sword battles and sorcery, with their sound mixes. Which is really tough to do when doing an audio drama of something that is by nature more suited to film or animation. But under the John Ainsworth’s capable direction all the departments at Big Finish along with the cast continue to deliver some great fantasy adventures that make it easy for you to imagine all characters in action.

While not quite as good as the second episode this third chapter of Rise of The Runelords does a pretty good job of continuing the story. I’m giving this a respectable 4 out of 5.
